Project Background
ATSER partnered with the City of Houston to design and construct a 2.3-mile racetrack in downtown Houston, including a key section in front of the Convention Center. The project required innovative engineering solutions to meet the dual-purpose needs of a high-performance racing surface capable of withstanding Indy car speeds and g-forces, as well as regular vehicular traffic.
The Challenge
To create a durable and safe racetrack surface that could withstand extreme conditions, including tire temperatures exceeding 300°F and accelerations of up to 7 g-forces, while also maintaining long-term functionality for everyday use.

The Goal
To deliver timely and accurate geotechnical recommendations to support the design and construction of improved drainage systems, wider concrete roads, and upgraded infrastructure, all while meeting the City of Houston’s stringent requirements and compressed project schedule.
ATSER’s Contributions
Geotechnical Investigation
- Conducted comprehensive evaluations of soil conditions and existing infrastructure along the racetrack route to inform pavement design decisions.
Pavement Design
- Developed a specialized surface course utilizing Superpave™ technology, featuring a binder exceeding PG 82-22 performance grade for extreme temperature and stress conditions.
Materials Testing & Inspection
- Performed rigorous laboratory and field testing to ensure the asphalt mix met stringent durability and safety standards for both racing and regular traffic conditions.
Construction Management
- Oversaw the implementation of the pavement design, ensuring compliance with project specifications and safety regulations throughout construction.
Project Outcome
ATSER’s engineering expertise resulted in a high-performance racetrack that seamlessly transitioned between use for high-speed Indy car racing and everyday vehicular traffic. The incorporation of Superpave™ technology ensured durability under extreme conditions, providing a track surface that met the highest standards of safety and performance.
