Geotechnical Investigation for City of Pasadena Bridge Analysis – Glenmore Ditch Bridges

Project Background

ATSER partnered with Binkley & Barfield Consulting Engineers for the Glenmore Ditch Bridges project, located along Portsmouth Street in Pasadena, Texas. This initiative focused on replacing the existing bridge and reconstructing the approach slabs. The project aimed to deliver accurate geotechnical insights to ensure the long-term stability of the new bridge’s foundation while meeting local flood control standards.

The Problem

Replacing the existing structure required an in-depth understanding of the subsurface conditions to design a stable foundation and prevent future structural issues. Challenges included assessing soil stability, groundwater conditions, and ensuring compliance with local flood control regulations.

The Goal

The project sought to provide geotechnical data that would guide safe and efficient construction planning, ensuring the new bridge and approach slabs met regulatory and engineering standards.

The Solution

ATSER conducted a comprehensive geotechnical investigation, including:

Site Exploration

  • 50-foot borings to evaluate subsurface and groundwater conditions.

Laboratory Testing

  • Key assessments such as soil classification, CU triaxial tests, and liquid/plastic limit analyses.

Engineering Recommendations

  • Using collected data to design stable foundations and provide construction excavation guidance.

Capacity Curve Assessments

  • Ensuring the bridge design adhered to local flood control standards and construction best practices.

Results

The project delivered critical geotechnical insights that enabled safe construction while adhering to local flood control regulations. ATSER’s precise analysis and recommendations ensured the stability of the new foundation, reducing risk and facilitating efficient planning for the bridge’s replacement.
